6 reasons to study in Southampton

University is your chance to fly the nest, gain a bit of independence, and take control of your own learning. Where you go is pretty much up to you, with more than 100 unis to choose from in the UK. There's also plenty of choice when it comes to the city or town that you’ll call home while you study. It’s all about finding the right place for you.

Historic Southampton is one student city that comes up time and time again as one of the best places for bright minds to thrive. Each year, thousands of new students move in and here are some of the reasons why...

1. The outstanding education

Whether you’re an academic type looking to kickstart your career in an area such as law, or you’re a artistic type on a more creative career path, Southampton has two universities to cover you. The University of Southampton has been named one of the top 100 universities in the world according to the QS university rankings. This puts it in the top 1% of the world’s educational institutions. Not a bad addition to your CV!

Alternatively, Solent University provides plenty of highly-regarded creative courses and industry-focused degrees to guide you into your chosen career. Studying here, you’ll benefit from good links to businesses (local and national) and well-connected course tutors.

2. It's a chance to get arty

Fancy yourself as a bit of a arty type? Love to get involved in festivals and events? Southampton has a well-established creative community, with plenty of craft events, underground music, and unusual things to do. There's a city art gallery that's free to enter that has an epic collection of works. Combine that with the many clubs and societies on offer at the universities and you’ll be meeting loads of like-minded people before you can say paintbrush!

3. The music venues

Not only is Southampton home to plenty of underground music venues such as The 1865 where you can expect to see a range of lesser known live bands and DJs, but it’s also home to an O2 Academy: the go-to venue for more mainstream artists. A nice way to increase the odds of seeing your favourite bands and singers in person.

4. The great outdoors

There are loads of opportunities for getting down with Mother Nature during a stay in Southampton. And because you're on the beautiful English coast, you’re never too far away from loads of sea-related activities, from watersports to coastal walks.

Not only can you head down to the seaside quite easily, but you’ve also got access to The Common: 365 acres of parkland and the perfect summer hangout. In fact, when the weather picks up, you can expect to find students from both universities relaxing near the lake or attending one of the many events that take place here.

5. It's a top choice for wannabe doctors

Did you know that Southampton has a great medical school? Trainee doctors come from far and wide to learn from some of the best medical tutors around. Plus, the city has great bus links, meaning med students are only a short journey from hospitals and the library.

6. The amazing nightlife and student culture

Southampton's two universities have paved the way for an amazing student culture, with the venues to keep it buzzing. There are plenty of bars, cafes, restaurants, and nightclubs, and we surveyed students from the city and asked them which places they thought were the best.
